Trevor Noah dismisses Kanye West’s beef: I have no beef with him

In a behind-the-scenes Tik Tok video posted on “The Daily Show,” host Trevor Noah shut down an audience member who asked him why he’s beefing with Kanye West. The alleged beef between the two began earlier this year after Noah slammed West for his ex-wife Kim Kardashian’s relentless bashing on social media. West responded by directing a racial slur at Noah on Instagram, which led to West being temporarily banned from the platform for a day.

“Why would I beef with Kanye? It’s a fun way to phrase it because that beef has to go both ways,” Noah told the audience. “Of course it does. In my limited understanding of the world, beef is always something that generally happens between two hip hop artists. I’ve never had a drink with Kanye West. I was worried about Kanye West.

West has sparked controversy over the past few weeks for making racist and anti-Semitic comments in various interviews. West has made controversial media appearances in the past that he struggles with mental illness, which has led people to defend West over his anti-Semitic comments. Noah did not specifically address West’s recent comments, but questioned why the media continues to give West a platform when he is known to have mental health issues.

“If someone tells me I have a mental health problem and they tell everyone they can’t control themselves if they don’t take their medication, and when that person is sick, everyone ignores one room and they don’t take their medication and they stage the person and then put them down… sometimes I think it’s a little bad to be honest with you,” Noah said.

“My grandfather was bipolar,” Noah continued. “I’m not saying it’s Kanye. I’m just saying my grandfather was bipolar, and one thing we knew was when he had an episode of it. He could somehow act and do certain things… but our job was to support him. I wonder if I go there and say, ‘Oh, my grandma has a room again. I’m going viral tonight!’ I think it’s a little weird.

“I have no beef with anyone who has openly stated that they are dealing with mental health issues. I have no beef with that man,” Noah said. “I have a beef with us as a community not rallying around the guy and saying, ‘Hey, maybe now’s not the time to put a microphone in your face so you can say everything.’ If that’s what you mean when you take your medication, that’s a different story. But since you told us that, I’m not going to sit back and say that.

“I’ve never had a beef with Kanye West,” Noah concluded, adding, “I’m still playing ‘College Dropout.’ I’m still playing the music. I still love the man I think. And I understand that he’s been through a lot, you know, and I don’t take that for granted. But I promised myself that I wouldn’t be the kind of person who sits around and talks happily about the people I love and then joins the grieving group and pretends I don’t belong. Too many people like to feel sorry for you when you’re dead and don’t tell you anything when you’re alive. So I don’t know where I’ll end up. But that’s it.”

The TikTok below isn’t the first time Noah has talked about his relationship with West. Interview in August 2022 Various Awards Circuit podcast, the host spoke about why he decided to make public comments about West’s behavior in the first place.

“I feel very comfortable speaking my mind in situations where people seem to forget that we’re dealing with human beings,” Noah says. “It’s easy to stand by, see a train wreck coming and say nothing about it. And after the train hits the tracks, ‘Oh, I saw that coming!’ We say. Well, then why didn’t you say anything? Especially if you have some sort of platform, you have an obligation to tell the truth. You know, see something and say something.

Noah’s latest comments follow Howard Stern’s viral response to West’s anti-Semitic comments. Stern compared West to Hitler and criticized West’s defenders for saying the rapper has mental health issues.

“With this mental illness, take the self-defense thing that it’s in,” Stern said. “You know, like, ‘Yeah, he’s mentally ill. Don’t worry about him…’ If he’s mentally ill, why don’t they put a guardian over his money like they did with poor Britney Spears?”
