DULUTH — The One Book Northland Committee has named its 2023 selection, which local literary institutions will encourage everyone in the region to read. “The Way of the Wolf: An Ojibwe Story, Told by Wolves” channels indigenous wisdom through elder wolf cubs.

Book cover: "The Way of the Wolf: An Ojibwe Story, Told by the Wolves" By Thomas de Peacock. The cover depicts a wolf howling on a starry night among trees near a lake.

“The Wolf’s Trail: An Ojibwe Story, Told By Wolves” has been selected as the 2023 selection for a book by Northland.

The book’s author, Thomas D. Peacock, is a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Anishinaabe and the winner of several Minnesota Book Awards.

Although the book is technically a novel, Peacock says it paints Ojibwe history in a way that defies conventional classification at the time of its publication.

“In a way, it’s historical fiction,” he told MPR News. “On the other hand, it’s not: it’s a cultural novel. I’m not sure what it is. I’m not sure there’s a word for it.”

Holy cow! Popular Publishing Press, based in Duluth, released the title in June 2020. Star Tribune book reviewer Pamela Miller called it a “quiet little masterpiece”, writing that “there is such strong wisdom in this novel”.

The One Book Northland program began in 2002 as “One Book, One Community,” with Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” as the first selection. Literary organizations including libraries, bookstores, and colleges in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin will participate, supported by regional events.

According to a news release, in the spring the committee will release a full list of 2023 One Book Northland events. In the meantime, the author will be on hand to sign copies of “The Wolf’s Trail” at Zenith Bookstore in Duluth on Dec. 29 at 11:30 a.m.
