Michelle Butt’s Netflix comedy adds Michelle Visage and Sarah Cooper

Michelle Visage (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”) and Sarah Cooper (“Sarah Cooper: Everything’s Fine”) are among the new cast additions to comedian Michelle Buteau’s upcoming Netflix series “Surviving the Fat.”

Visage (also of ’90s group Seduction, with hits like “Two to Make It Right” and “This Could Be Love”) will play Avery in the eight-episode comedy, while Cooper will play Sydney. Also added to the cast are Anthony Michael Lopez (“Broad City,” “Mapplethorpe”) as Bruce, Lisa Traeger (“King of Staten Island,” The Degenerates) as Jade and Alan K. Washington. (“The Deuce”, “High Fidelity”) Like Trent.

In addition to Boot, previously announced cast members include Tony Bell, Tasha Smith, Garcel Beauvais, Anissa Felix, Taylor Seeley and Marwan Zotti.

“Surviving the Fat” is based on Buteau’s 2020 essay book of the same name. The comedian stars as Mavis Beaumont, a black, plus-size woman navigating life after finding herself newly single. In the show’s opening line, “Mavis unexpectedly finds herself having to rebuild her life as a struggling stylist. She is determined not only to survive, but to thrive with the support of her chosen family, a body positive attitude and a beautiful lip gloss v-neck.

The series was created by Booth and Daniel Sanchez-Weitzel, who serves as the showrunner for the series. The series is executive produced by Ravi Nandan and Ali Rich from A24, and Ann Hong from Mosaic.

“Surviving the Fat” continues Boutou’s relationship with the streamer, which produced the original stand-up special “Michelle Boutou: Welcome to Boutopia,” hosted reality series “The Circle” and “Barbeque Showdown” and premiered “Tales of the City” and Movie “It Could Always Be Mine.
