Luca Marinelli has been cast as Benito Mussolini in Joe Wright’s upcoming biopic series For Heaven.
Difference Wright, who recently finished promoting his feature film “Cyrano,” announced last month that he would direct a series of films about the origins of Mussolini’s rule against the backdrop of fascism and World War II.
Wright also helmed the Oscar-nominated Winston Churchill drama “Darkest Hour” for Gary Oldman’s portrayal of the former British prime minister.
“M. “Son of the Century” is based on the book by Antonio Scurati and is set to go into production at Italy’s Cinecittà studio in the next few weeks. Wright directs all eight episodes.
Marinelli is an award-winning performer at festivals including Venice and Berlin. He appeared in “The Old Guard” with Charlize Theron and is also known for his roles in “Martin Eden” and “They Call Me Jig.”
“M. Boy of the Century” is produced by Sky Studios and Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment Pictures, a Fremantle company in association with Pate.
Stefano Bises (“Gemora”) and David Serino (“Esterno Note”) wrote the series, which will debut exclusively on Sky Atlantic and the streaming platform in all Sky European markets. Fremantle is stripping international rights.
As Niels Hartmann told Sky Studios Italia and Deutschland EVP, “Like ‘M.’ For such a great project and for such a challenging role as Mussolini, we can only think of a rare and special talent like Luca Marinelli. . Under the direction of a masterful guide like Joe Wright and a Scurati novel here edited by Stefano Bises and David Serino, we’re ready to embark on a project that marks the next step in our creative and productive journey.
