Jason David Frank dies: ‘Power Rangers’ star was 49

Jason David Frank, the actor who created the role of Tommy Oliver aka Green Ranger in the “Power Rangers” franchise, died on November 19 in Texas. He was 49 years old.

Frank’s death was confirmed to The Associated Press by his manager, Justin Hunt. No further details about the actor’s death could be confirmed, but she asked for “the privacy of his family and friends at this terrible time of losing such a wonderful human being.”

“Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” debuted on Fox Kids in 1993, a three-year run inspired by its portrayal of the dynamic kung fu vigilante vigilantes for young audiences. The “Power Rangers” franchise has since continued through several iterations and adaptations, with Frank often returning to the role in series to become a fan favorite.

Frank’s character was introduced as an antagonist in the first series – placed under the spell of Power Rangers’ nemesis Rita Repulsa, the Green Ranger is the team’s deadly adversary. Originally intended for a specific appearance, Frank became a series regular due to the character’s popularity among fans. After being freed from Rita’s mind manipulation, the Green Ranger was transformed into the White Ranger – a role Frank filled for the next two seasons.

Frank received roles in other “Power Rangers” shows and movies, such as the Red Zeo Ranger in “Power Rangers Zeo” and the first Red Turbo Ranger in “Power Rangers Turbo”, although he separated from the second project mid-season. Other highlights from the franchise include appearances in “Power Rangers Wild Force,” “Power Rangers: DinoThunder” and “Power Rangers Ninja Steel.”

Born September 4th in Covina, California, Frank’s legacy lives on as enshrined in the World Karate Union Hall of Fame and Black Belt Hall of Fame. Frank’s acrobatic skills were no thanks to movie magic; The popular actor is an eighth degree black belt in karate and has experience in various martial arts styles including Taekwondo, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. He first started learning karate at the age of four and received his first black belt at the age of 12.

In 1994, Frank began opening martial arts schools. At these dojos, Frank taught a new, self-invented fighting system called Toso Kun Do, which translates to “Battlefield” and includes many different martial arts styles.

While “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” was being wrapped, Frank met his longtime business partner, Kiyoshi Rick Herbster. Together they ran the Rising Sun Karate Academy, where Frank remained an instructor for the rest of his life.

Frank In 2010, he defeated MMA fighter Jonathon “Mack Track” Mack in the first round at the US Amateur Fighting Association’s inaugural “Lonestar Beatdown” in a mixed martial arts ring in Houston, Texas. A year before the fight, he began accepting MMA coaching from UFC lightweight Melvin Gillard.

Recently, Frank is set to star in an upcoming film from director Aaron Schonke. Titled “Legend of the White Dragon,” the film follows Frank as the legendary warrior.

Frank is survived by his two sons, Hunter and Jacob, and his two daughters, Skye and Jenna.
