As is his custom, director James Gunn has released an all-new mix on digital streaming platforms, marking the Nov. 25 premiere of “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” on Disney+.
Lamb prepares a hand-picked selection of Christmas carols and a holiday special where Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Drax (Dave Bautista) kidnap actor Kevin Bacon from Earth and deliver it to Peter (Chris Pratt) as a Christmas present.
The accompanying playlist – titled “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Awesome Mix” – consists of 11 tracks, which include needle drops and simultaneous use of original songs. Gunn enlisted the help of old ’97s frontman Rhett Miller to write the special’s hilarious opening number, “I Don’t Know What It Is (But It’s Here).”
“When I was writing a song for the #GotGHolidaySpecial, I asked my friend @rhettmiller to write it with me and I was like, ‘What the hell, why don’t you and the @Old97s play in a band?!’ I said. Some of the funnest days ever,” Gunn captioned a Nov. 23 Instagram post.
Dressed head-to-toe in prosthetics and futuristic costumes, the old 97ers transformed into alien rock band Bzermikitokolok and Noheremen for the performance, chanting “Ho, Ho, Ho, Ho, Ho! / Children of earth are very strange! The band will take the final revenge on stage at the show’s conclusion to sing their 2018 hit, “It’s Christmas Time,” but Bacon is taking lead vocals.
But the award for the most effective use of a holiday song in the 45-minute picture goes to Wayne Falls’ “I Want a Guest for Christmas,” played as Drax and Mantis chase Bacon around their Hollywood home. Kidnapping.
A close second is “Christmas Wrap” by Waitresses, a nice horn-driven track about Mantis and Drax going to a bar on Earth for the first time.
Other artists hand-picked by Lamb for the original soundtrack include Smashing Pumpkins, Lowe and Wombats. Hollywood Records also released a 74-track mixed edition, which includes score cues and additional needle drops from past films in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise.
