Christmas — and Kevin Bacon — is coming for Marvel fans.
Star-Lord, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Mantis and Nebula are bringing holiday cheer to Disney+, as Marvel Studios released the first look at “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special,” set for release on November 25.
In the trailer, Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord isn’t feeling the Christmas spirit after losing his love Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) in “Avengers: Endgame.” To cheer him up, the Guardians travel to Earth to snatch the perfect Christmas present – Hollywood star Kevin Bacon. Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) go to his Hollywood home, which is decorated with Christmas decorations and a smart-home security system. They break into Bacon’s house, and the actor — no stranger to superhero movies after appearing in “X-Men: First Class” — takes off.
“The Guardians” creator and three-time series director James Gunn is also at the helm of this “holiday special.” He previously worked with Bacon in the 2010 superhero comedy “Super.” Gunn is very high on this latest “Guardians” project, with Gunn describing the special as “the best thing” he’s ever done.
Holiday specials aren’t entirely foreign to Marvel. There are plenty of Yuletide jokes, including the “Giant Super Hero Holiday Grab-Bag” and a 1993 Marvel special collection of shorts, including one starring Ghost Rider (who doesn’t have a flaming skull on a motorcycle to say Christmas). From Santa Claus lighting up the bad guys and another with the Hulk helping the seasonal depression. It was a mutant animated holiday special starring Wolverine (who hates Christmas) and Gambit, who gets into a kitchen-set ego battle with Jean Grey. Needless to say, “Guardians of the Galaxy” has a high precedent as far as specials go.
The holiday special represents another development in Marvel’s explosion on the TV front. Last year, “WandaVision,” “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” “What if…?” And “Hawkeye” followed things up this year with “Moon Knight,” “W.Marvel” and “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.” The horror-themed “Werewolf by Night” was released this month as Marvel Studios’ first special.
As is the norm with most holiday specials, “Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” will be available to watch in living rooms, streaming exclusively on Disney+ rather than in theaters. Through the movie, “Galaxy Vol. 3” in theaters May 5, 2023.
