Bertelsmann, Luxembourg’s media giant RTL Group, which owns Fremantle, reported revenue of 5.06 billion euros ($4.97 billion) for the first nine months of 2022, up 12 percent from the same period in 2021.

RTL Group has interests in 56 television stations, eight streaming services and 36 radio stations. The group’s content business, Fremantle, is one of the world’s leading creators, producers and distributors of scripted and unscripted content, including “American Idol”, “Britain’s Got Talent” and “The X Factor”.

Group revenue was primarily driven by strong performance from Fremantle and RTL Nederland, the acquisition of Gruner + Jahr and Super RTL by RTL Deutschland and positive foreign exchange effects, RTL Group said.

Revenue at Fremantle rose 27.8% to €1.65 billion. Group revenue rose 18.9% to €1.7 billion in the third quarter of 2022; This was more growth than Fremantle’s revenue and streaming revenue, which was more than offset by lower TV advertising revenue, the group said. The TV ad revenue market was up 10.7% with Germany and France down 7% and 2% respectively. The group’s distribution revenue rose 2.8% to 329 million euros.

Streaming revenue from RTL+ and Videoland rose by 20.4% to €195 million, thanks to a rapidly growing number of pay subscribers. By the end of September 2022, RTL Group registered 4.7 million paying subscribers on RTL+ in Germany and Videoland in the Netherlands.

Overall, the group revised its revenue forecast to 7.2 billion euros – the previous guidance was from 7.3 to 7.5 billion euros. It expects adjusted EBITA (earnings before interest, taxes and charges) to be between €1.05 and €1.15 billion for 2022, including a start-up loss of up to €250 million.

“Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, we expect the challenging advertising market environment to continue, particularly in Germany,” said RTL Group CEO Thomas Rabe. Despite this and several external factors, especially the war in Ukraine, inflation, energy supply and supply chain issues, RTL Group expects to be in line with the revised EBTA guidance in August.
