Nexstar laid off 30-40 employees at the CW network on Tuesday, marking the first outright personnel overhaul at the “Walker” broadcast since changing ownership, a source familiar with the situation said.

Among those cuts was longtime CW comms chief Paul Hewitt, who was replaced by Beth Feldman. Additionally, several executives were let go in distribution, strategy and affiliate communications, with Google vet Rebecca Dopp overseeing those departments.

Nexstar is wasting little time revitalizing The CW, a plan to replace longtime CW president Mark Pedowitz, who was ousted from Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery’s sale of the network to Nexstar on Oct. 3. Among the deals were the letting go of Rick Haskins and head of ad sales Mitch Nedick and branding.

Following a half-year of speculation and building sales, TV station giant Nexstar is expected to begin redirecting The CW’s operations toward its core business interests — owning local stations.

The CW, home to popular teen content like “Supernatural” and “Gossip Girl” and other dramas of its ilk, is expected to shift its focus to unscripted fare and news programming. The network has canceled several shows this year, including “4400,” “Batwoman,” “Charmed,” “Dynasty,” “Stargirl,” “Stories of Tomorrow,” “Into the Dark,” “Legacies,” “Fairy Tales.” Hidden Temple, “Nancy Drew,” “Naomi,” “Roswell, New Mexico” and “Tom Swift” have also given final season orders to “Riverdale” and “The Flash.”

Rebranding costs a fortune, and the network’s name is already included in cable-guide listings and smart-TV selections.
